To My Lover

ABOUT THE PIECE

Autoromanticism: (noun)

/ˈɔːtəʊ'rəʊˈmæntɪsɪzm/

To be romantically attracted to oneself. Not to be confused with narcissism or self-absorbed tendencies, autoromanticism is a positive orientation centered on romancing yourself, regardless of self-image or esteem. Similar to but not synonymous with the concept of self-love.

"This piece is created with found objects representing how my view on life has evolved over time as I grew to accept and prioritize myself. I developed a romantic relationship with myself as I realized and now believe your best and most important lover should be yourself. This is why the work primarily serves as a self-portrait; the figure is based on my own body and self-perception, as I often depict myself with antlers and wings."

"The natural materials are reminiscent of the places where I feel most like myself. They also call upon flower language to further perpetuate hidden meanings. A true nature, if you will:

Green hydrangeas represent good fortune, prosperity, and renewal, and are often gifted to people who need a fresh start and positive energy in their life. Daffodils, also known as Narcissi flowers, not only represent self-love, but also creativity, inspiration, awareness, and inner reflection, forgiveness, and vitality."

The mirrors are meant to prompt self-reflection (ha!) in viewers. Surrounded by these flowers, you might ask yourself: How can you best show love to yourself? How might you enable and follow through? How can you give yourself a fresh start? To forgive yourself? How might you express yourself? When was the last time you reminded yourself you are beautiful, unique, and deserve love and kindness?

(Viewers can feel free to take selfies in the mirrors to capture a moment of self-celebration. Please tag the artist's Instagram, @maeleatan when posting photos of the artwork.)
